About Me

I have worked as a journalist around the world for nearly 30 years covering subjects ranging from demitasse to the DMZ between North and South Korea. In 1999, I began writing about wine while living in California's Napa Valley, which led to wine columns in the San Francisco Chronicle and the Contra Costa Times,  and frequent contributions to Decanter magazine (London) and Wine Enthusiast magazine. I've written Wine Genius (MQ Publications, London), Wine Aficionado (Octopus Publishing Group, London) and Napa Valley: The Land, the Wine, the People (Ten Speed Press, Berkeley). A former documentary filmmaker and foreign correspondent in Tokyo, Japan, I had a briefer career as a lawyer in elder law in the San Francisco Bay Area. I live in San Francisco with my family.
